LET NATURE INVITE YOUR CHILD TO PLAY ALL DAY!
WHY WE CREATED THIS SENSORY BIN?
The creators of the Play Town Nature Treasures Sensory Bin are Mothers & Aunties who know that nature play at home is important. How so? We have kids in our lives who do so much better when they are engaged with natural elements every day. Toys are fine, but nature is better.
Why? Richard Taylor, PHD. Head of The Physics Department at University of Oregon may have summed it up best when he said:
“Brain-wave tests show that looking at complex, repetitive patterns called fractals has the same effect as meditating. In a forest, you will find fractal patterns everywhere; in the branching ferns and trees, in gnarled roots, in intersecting streams and waterfalls, in fluffy clouds. It’s called “effortless looking” and it happens subconsciously. Those fractal patterns pour into our brains and relax us completely.”
Relax us completely!? Did he just say that? Sign us up and our kids too!
Nature play is the ideal play. But when we looked for nature toys on the market, mostly we just found plastic accessories, high-end wooden toys and science kits available. The Nature Treasures Sensory Bin is designed to easily engage with raw natural materials at home. So even if you can’t get out of the house or live in an area where nature feels hard to access, your child can still benefit from those amazing fractal patterns found on the curated nature treasures. And we took this sensory bin idea one step further by adding one of the greatest toys of all time into the mix; a box! Kids love to play with boxes. Play Town set out to design a box that truly delivers with so many ways to play: scenic backdrop, craft project, tactile bin and storage vessel. That’s a lot of added value!
We saw a place for 100% organic matter for kids to engage with the actual Earth no matter where they live. It’s tried and true that when you engage with the Earth, you come to appreciate the Earth. And when you are appreciate the Earth you want to protect it. Yes! There is a greater mission involved with these sensory bins: to cultivate Earth loving humans that will take meaningful steps to protect our precious home. Studies show that the critical period to introduce nature to a child for greatest impact is before the age of five.
So what are you waiting for? Order a Play Town Nature Treasures Sensory Bin for your child today and start them down the path to sensory awareness, creative exploration and stewardship of our planet!
GIANT SEQUOIA TREE PINE CONES
Giant sequoias occur naturally in only one place on Earth—the western slope of the Sierra Nevada mountain range in California. But now you can get their beautiful, fragrant pine cones for your child’s nature collection. Each sensory bin comes with a pouch full of these hardy yet smooth pine cones that lend themselves to endless ways to play. Use them as building materials, work on counting, weighing, gravity and sorting play and incorporate them in craft projects. And don’t forget to stop and smell the pine cones- the scent is amazing!
LEARNING THROUGH PLAY
We packed each cotton pouch full of nature treasures, so if your child feels compelled to share don’t be surprised! They are learning through play with this unique sensory bin and a big lesson for young children is sharing.
TAKING CARE OF THE EARTH
Kids can learn empathy easily through nature based play. Many things in nature are smaller than even the smallest child and this can lead to them protecting items and displaying empathetic qualities. It’s beautiful to watch a child get down on the level of another living thing and offer protection. We know that is a useful skill throughout life and the Nature Treasures Sensory Bin can inspire that kind of play.
INDEPENDENT PLAY ZONE
This bin is designed to fuel kids’ imagination and exploration! When they get past the “put everything in your mouth” stage they are ready to be let loose with the nature treasures. To get them started you could model some play scenarios and then step back and see which direction they go. They may make a mess– and that’s okay. Kids need to learn to clean up their messes. It’s all part of the learning through play process.
BROWNI BUTTERFLY BARK
We were instantly drawn to this gorgeous bark commonly found in lands all across Asia and the Pacific Islands. Cut from the Sapponwood tree, these pieces will make your play rooms smell fresh and aromatic. They fit nicely in even the smallest of hands and have a perfect tactile combination of smooth ridges and textured edges. Kids love stacking, counting, arranging and transporting these special nature treasures and they make fun little roads for cars and other mobile toys to topple over.
Nature is the inspiration and path of S.T.E.M learning. It makes sense to add the Nature Treasures Sensory Bin to your child’s home based lab. Our most imaginative play actually happens later in childhood than we recall; age 12. It’s true! Older kids will play in very rich, cooperative ways when given the distraction free time and space.
NATURE AS CANVAS
The nature treasures are intriguing in so many ways and will certainly lend themselves to being both the inspiration for artistic expression and the canvas on which to create. We love seeing the items transform as they are re-used and re-purposed in so many ways. Please post photos of your child’s creation with the your reviews! We love to see all the ways to play!
Adults need nature too! Enjoy the benefits of spending time with these natural items and your beloved children. This kind of quality time is truly the antidote for our stress filled modern world. All in the family can engage through the sensory bin with creative play, imaginative play and even story telling. Enjoy!
This natural treasure is Moss-some! Sphagnum moss has been come in handy for people around the globe as filling for pillows and bedding as well as an insulator to keep items warm or cold and back in the day it was even used as a bandage. So when we say it’s cool we mean it is useful, interesting and has loads of sensory play potential. When sprayed, the moss will help your child to appreciate the scent of forest floor with it’s earthy, deep tones. Breath it in together. Discuss the forest floor and how teeming with both life and decay it is. This nature treasure is the ultimate conversation starter and science project subject.
Wow! Sphagnum moss can absorb twenty times it’s weight in water. Can you say water play? Use a spray bottle to gently change the texture into a fluffy, moss pillow. Or go all out and dunk a handful of moss in a bucket of water. Watch it swell. Then wring it out. Kids love this stuff and can literally be absorbed (pun intended) for hours (well minutes for the toddler set). Let the moss air dry completely before storing and re-using.
HOME BASED EXPLORATION
Explore the forest without leaving your house. In this time, we have to make adjustments. What once seemed like an easy, accessible trip to the park, may now be out of reach. Don’t let this rob your child of nature play and exploration! The Nature Treasures Sensory Bin was designed during the lock down of 2020 to assist urban families with at home nature exploration.
